THCA Cigar vs CBD Cigar: The Potency Difference, Explained
Share
Search "hemp cigar" and you will find two products wearing one name. Both are legally hemp. Both are federally compliant. One will not change how you feel in any measurable way, and the other very much will. The THCA cigar vs CBD cigar question is not a matter of grade, price, or craftsmanship — it is a matter of which cannabinoid the flower was grown to carry, and almost nobody selling either one says so plainly.
Here is the plain version.
THCA cigar vs CBD cigar: the one-line answer
A CBD cigar is loaded with hemp flower bred for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is not intoxicating at any dose. A THCA cigar is loaded with hemp flower bred for tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, which converts to THC the moment you light it. Same plant, same legal lane, opposite experience.
Both stay inside the same federal boundary because that boundary measures delta-9 THC by dry weight at harvest, not what the flower becomes under a flame. We covered why the legal pathway — not the wrapper — is the real dividing line in cannabis cigar vs hemp cigar. This post is the other half of that answer: what the two actually do.
Are hemp cigars psychoactive? Only half of them
The reason this question keeps getting asked is that the category answers it inconsistently. The established CBD-cigar brands are explicit that their products are non-intoxicating, and they are telling the truth. Wild Hemp's cigarillos are marketed on exactly that basis — hemp flower, no tobacco, no nicotine, no high. Havana Hemp says the same. Secret Nature says the same. That is not marketing evasion; it is an accurate description of what CBD does.
The problem is that this framing became the default definition of "hemp cigar," and a hemp-derived cigar built on THCA is a different product entirely. When a shopper reads a dozen hemp-cigar explainers that all conclude "non-intoxicating," then buys a THCA cigar expecting the same, the expectation gap is the seller's fault, not the shopper's.
So: are hemp cigars psychoactive? A CBD one, no. A THCA one, yes — and you should buy it knowing that.
What is actually inside a CBD cigar
The most useful thing to know about CBD cigars is how wildly the loading varies between brands, because it tells you the category has no standard at all.
- Jas Sum Kral's Nuggs cigar carries roughly 20 mg of a proprietary CBD solution.
- Wild Hemp cigarillos carry about 250 mg of CBD in 1.5 grams of hemp flower.
- Secret Nature's Cherry Cough cigar packs three grams of flower plus CBD hash and CBD isolate.
- A mid-sized Havana Hemp Corona runs 3 to 9 grams and can reach roughly 1,100 mg of CBD.
That is a fifty-fold spread inside one product category, all sold under the same two words. None of them will get you high, which is the point — but if you are comparing "hemp cigars" by price, you are comparing objects that have almost nothing in common.
What is actually inside a THCA cigar
THCA hemp flower typically tests in the 20–35% range by weight, which puts it in the same potency band as top-shelf dispensary product. The chemistry is the whole story: THCA is the acidic precursor sitting in raw flower, and heat drives off a carboxyl group and converts it to delta-9 THC. Nothing about that reaction cares which legal category the flower was sold under.
Format determines the rest. Our uninfused cigars run 1.75 grams of whole flower — the single-origin flower cigars are built for people who want the cultivar to speak for itself, and Birkin Dream is the sativa expression of that. The diamond-infused cigars run 2 grams and add nano-emulsified THCA diamonds to the roll, which raises the ceiling substantially — Oppenheimer is the indica counterpart. If you want the wider picture on cigar-format hemp generally, our hemp cannagar guide covers it, and the wrapper-material question is handled separately over on our brand site.
CBD cigar vs THCA cigar potency: the numbers do not compare
Here is the trap. CBD cigars are advertised in milligrams. THCA cigars are advertised in percentages. Those are not the same unit, and converting between them by eye is how people end up disappointed.
Run the arithmetic once and it stops being confusing. A 2-gram cigar at 28% THCA holds roughly 560 mg of THCA. After decarboxylation the theoretical conversion factor is about 0.877, so call it under 500 mg of THC available, minus whatever combustion destroys. Put that next to a 250 mg CBD cigarillo and the milligram figures look adjacent. They are not remotely adjacent, because the two molecules do entirely different things at the receptor level. Milligrams of a non-intoxicating cannabinoid and milligrams of an intoxicating one are not interchangeable currency.
The practical takeaway: never compare a CBD cigar and a THCA cigar on stated milligrams. Compare them on which cannabinoid is doing the work.
Buying a THCA cigar online without guessing
Whichever side you land on, the certificate of analysis is the only document that settles it. Three things to check:
- Which cannabinoid dominates. A real COA breaks out THCA, delta-9 THC, and CBD separately. If the flower is CBD-dominant, the cigar is a CBD cigar regardless of how it is titled.
- Delta-9 by dry weight. This is the compliance number, and it should be stated, not implied.
- Batch match. The COA should correspond to the batch you are being sold, not a general brand-level document.
Ours are posted on our COA page, and the regulatory picture is laid out on our legality page. One more thing worth knowing before you buy: a THCA product can absolutely produce a positive result on a standard screen, which we cover in does THCA show up on a drug test. A CBD cigar carries far less of that risk, though not zero.
Which one you should be buying
If you want the ritual of a cigar — the draw, the ash, the hour it takes — without any alteration in how you feel, buy a CBD cigar and buy one with a stated milligram load and a COA behind it. That is a legitimate product and it does what it claims.
If you want a cigar-format smoke that actually delivers, a THCA cigar is what you are looking for, and it should be bought the way you would buy any potent thing: knowing the number, knowing the format, and starting smaller than you think you need to. You can see the full lineup here, or read why we build them the way we do.
What you should not do is buy either one by accident.
